IOWA CITY COMMUNITY SUPPORTED ART! LAUNCH EVENT!
Leaf Kitchen • Iowa City • Sunday, December 18th @ 7:30 PM

PS1 is invested in building a community of progressive artists and thinkers. The ICCSA program (like more traditional CSAs you may be familiar with) is a grassroots program, promoting an alternative mode of supporting artists and arts spaces in Iowa City. It is a holistic system of patronage that encourages greater engagement between audience and artist, which leads to deeper roots for the entire local arts community.

[MORE INFO]
For more info on ICCSA or the launch event, please contact John Engelbrecht, Program Director, Public Space One at 319.331.8893 or iccsa@publicspaceone.com.

A big THANK YOU to the Leaf Kitchen for helping to make this event a reality! Their generosity and support has allowed us to truly expand our mission and make this the further-reaching community event it deserves to be.

This Week at PS1 (Oct. 24) http://publicspaceone.com/blog/2011/10/27/week-ps1-oct-24/ http://publicspaceone.com/blog/2011/10/27/week-ps1-oct-24/#comments Thu, 27 Oct 2011 20:29:09 +0000 PS1_Admin http://publicspaceone.com/?p=919 Continue reading ]]> This week PS1 wraps two projects, airs grievances and hosts poetry, dance and music!

On Thursday the 27th, the Works in Progress SuperArt series presents two movement performances — Suri Nuance – Thai Move Thai Dance; and Evolutions: the Toss Aways – part 3 of Amy Lynne Barr / Katie Fowley dance/poetry collaboration. 7pm.

Friday the 28th is the Works in Progress Closing Reception, featuring SoundPool: Performances by Analia Alegra-Femenias / Chris Weirsema; and a group movement improv/dance party to celebrate a fantastic month of dance, collaboration, text and performance at the PS1 space. 7pm.

Saturday hosts a double feature. First theatre than song. At 6PM, It’s POSTCARDS FROM THE APOCALYPSE II, a one-man play written/directed by JOSH BEADLE and starring RICK ADAMS who hacks and slashes his way through scads of the undead and performs a dozen or so characters from your favorite zombie flick. Also performances on Sunday at 1 & 6PM. Check out the show for a mere $10 and we’ll throw in a bonus bucket of blood JUST FOR YOU!!! See you at theatre/basement.

Later Saturday night (the 29th) join Ed Gray & Company as they play a show with Chicago singer/songster Thomas Comerford. $5. 9PM start.

On Monday the 31st, Strange Cage, IC’s newest poetry org presents: Poetry Sacrifice + the Zodiac Trio. Students from the Iowa Youth Writing Project will read and there will be music by the Zodiac Trio. 7pm.

On Tuesday the 1st, PS1 celebrates the end of the 500 fundraising drive, a 500 hour effort to raise 500 dollars to support programing at the space. Donate a buck in the next 6 days and PS1 will forever inscribe your name on a crumbling wall in the space! And come out next Tuesday, for a Free Art School celebration.

In the spirit of SOUP, the Experimental Fridge, and our baseline belief in adding up all the little things to a much bigger thing, I would like to introduce THE 500.

The idea behind THE 500 is simple. Over the next 500 hours we hope to raise 500 dollars and reach (potentially, hopefully, assuredly?) 500 likes on our facebook page. These numbers are important* because they represent every supporter putting at least a dollar in the pot (the glass pot as you enter the space, SEE event pic) and make this a fundraiser across the board, involving all the groups who use the space on a regular (or not) basis. Though this contribution is negligible on an individual level, it will have a major impact on our space, our programming, and our shoestring budget.

There are a plethora of events throughout the month of October (many of them FREE!) including dance, performance art, music shows, panels, readings, workshops, lectures, and more in which you will have the opportunity to donate. There is also a great exhibition to boot: WiP(iii): SuperArt, complete with a mudhut (for a solitary dance party experience). We also have new gallery hours (open every single day this month!) as well as our weekly Little Village Live broadcast and Sunday night Swing Dancing. Check the website for more details, or keep up with us daily on facebook or twitter, and please help us make this successful far-reaching fundraiser. Add your support to THE 500 and pass the word along!

We’ll keep you updated as the hours count down and the likes add up! Thanks for your support and stay tuned for the good things it will bring!

*About “Important” Numbers: Which is not to say our supporters are strictly derived from our facebook page. Only to say that facebook is good at tallying numbers and the numbers it has tallied in this instance are being turned into a sporty fundraiser game. And we’re the field.

3 Exhibition Opportunities http://publicspaceone.com/blog/2011/09/29/3-exhibition-opportunities/ http://publicspaceone.com/blog/2011/09/29/3-exhibition-opportunities/#comments Thu, 29 Sep 2011 22:00:39 +0000 PS1_Admin http://publicspaceone.com/?p=885 Continue reading ]]> PS1 is opening its doors and walls to you and everyone you know. We have 3 exhibition opportunities that are currently accepting submissions:

1. The Sketchbook Project
2. PS1 Spring Exhibition Series
3. Elsewhere

1. We will join The Art House Co-op and thousands of artists from around the world to create sketchbooks that will be shown in cities throughout North America. You pick out a theme; you draw/write/collage/create to your heart’s content; your sketchbook heads off into the world. We will be hosting draw together meetings to encourage and help one another, and there will be an exhibition of all of the sketchbooks we make at PS1 before they head off into the world. There are small fees to participate in the project, but the more people participate, the bigger the discount we can get! Come to a meeting October 18 at 6pm at PS1 to find out more and start discussing your ideas. Check out The Art House Co-op’s website for more information.

2. For the second year, PS1 is dedicating the spring to the work you have been making and doing. We will take proposals for solo and group exhibitions that will happen throughout the spring. See what we look for in a proposal here. Send proposals to gallery@publicspaceone.com by October 31.

3. Elsewhere is exactly what it sounds like, an exhibition of things that happened somewhere else, events that have already happened. If you have ever held an event or will be holding an event, we want to show that you did. Send any documentation that exists. All events and all documentation accepted, non-photographic documentation encouraged. Send or drop off any documentation of events to PS1 by November 18, 2011.

If you have any questions, comments, or simply do not understand what is going on, let us know. Email us at gallery@publicspaceone.com or stop by any of our new gallery hours. Reminders about all of the above information will be coming soon.

SUPER ART: WiP[iii] (general call) http://publicspaceone.com/blog/2011/07/04/super-art-wipiii-general-call/ http://publicspaceone.com/blog/2011/07/04/super-art-wipiii-general-call/#comments Tue, 05 Jul 2011 04:06:30 +0000 PS1_Admin http://publicspaceone.com/?p=843 Continue reading ]]> PHOTOGRAPHERS, LIBRETTISTS, ILLUSTRATORS, FILMMAKERS, COSTUME DESIGNERS, PAINTERS, SOUND CREATORS, SCULPTORS, PLAYWRIGHTS, POETS, MAD SCIENTISTS, MOVERS, INSTALLATION ARTISTS, ACTORS, MACGYVER TYPES, CHOREOGRAPHERS, CINEMATOGRAPHERS, DANCERS, PERFORMANCE ARTISTS, POETS, MUSICIANS, SET AND SCENIC DESIGNERS, COLLAGERS, CREATIVE PEOPLE WORKING IN ANY MEDIUM-

Announcing an open call for artists all of persuasions to contribute their ideas and talents to a collaborative, inter-disciplinary installation and performance series culminating at Public Space One throughout the month of October.

This project is a continuation/ reinvention of the Works in Progress Festival and aims to provide a community for feedback and support throughout the duration of the project. The project will begin with a meeting 6 pm Sunday JULY 10th where interested artists will come together and discuss their own current work and interests in their field in the hopes that connections across disciplines will be made.

There are no predetermined rules about who can collaborate with whom or how many artists or various mediums can work together, but it will be decided early on how all of the discrete parts will come together in the shared space. The theme of the entire project will be determined by the interests and ideas contributed by the artists involved; since the installation and performance series will be occurring throughout the month of October, the projects that result from the mix of artists will be experienced as works in progress leading up to a yet undetermined end event and closing show. Artists will have from the middle of July through October 28th 2011 to generate and discuss concepts, ideas, and create with each other.

This project is the brainchild of local dancemakers and PS1 and is being funded by the donations gathered by a benefit dance concert. There is $800 that artists will be able to divvy up and use for materials depending on their needs. The guiding spirit of this collaborative event is one of cooperation, exploration, and a shared desire to create works of art that cross and blend disciplines while forging a strong network of support in Iowa City’s creative community.

July 10th meeting held at 720 Walnut Street

Fallacious Physics and Scientific Half-Truths!

Alliances and Betrayals!

The Latest Protocol on Blinding Laser Weapons!

In a world where Good battles Evil, and where stimulated emissions of photons blur the lines between the two, questions are raised! For instance: Why are there apparent violations of the symmetry between matter and antimatter? What was the nature of the quark-gluon plasma in the early universe? And where are our protagonist’s eyeglasses?!

Don’t miss this moving exploration of friendship, intergalactic warfare, and the incredible longevity of shelf-stable baked goods.

Start Time: 6pm
End Time: 7pm
