A Practical Guide for Everyday Be-Coming (Tutorials)

  • Public Space One 229 N. Gilbert St. Iowa City, IA 52245 United States (map)

In A Practical Guide for Everyday Be-Coming (Tutorials), an engaged participant might learn how to something. Conventions become rules, potentially liberating through play. Play with and within it, discovering what brings joy and connection within the confines of social constructions. A body might be a convention, or a nebulous cluster: summit and/or explore and/or fall down.

A Practical Guide for Everyday Be-Coming (Tutorials) is a multimedia installation that evolves each time it is exhibited. The body of work includes a series of 360 videos, sculptural installation, interactive components, a performative lecture + ritual, poetic postcards, and instructional text.

about the artist:
Liz  Clayton Scofield aka “Clay”[they/them/their] is a cloud, an orange, and a sonnet, seeking like-minded nebulous accumulations, citrus fruits, and poetic forms to play with across skies, trees, and pages.

They are an undisciplined artist dabbling in a variety of media to find meanings that fall through the cracks of specialization. They engage in a process of transformational play in their creative practice. Their work includes performance, video, poetry, and essay exploring how to being, and so on. They strive towards models of artistic engagement that prioritize world-building, self-making (or -being?), radical-imagining, connection, and process over production.

An obligatory list of meaningful interactions, exchanges of labor, and opportunities they had to learn some things and meet some friends:

Their work has been featured in publications including Number, Nashville Arts, Wussy, and Dinner Bell. Exhibitions and performances include Cucalorus Festival, SeedSpace, Fuller Projects, and Noise Gallery. They have been an artist-in-residence with Cucalorus, the School of Making Thinking, Lazuli, and the JHU-MICA Film Centre. They hold an MFA in digital art from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a BA from Vanderbilt University. They are currently writing poems at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and serving on the board of the School of Making Thinking.
