“The role of the artist is to take whatever it is they believe in and put it out there so the public can see it” - David Le Batard

“The artist’s job is to be a witness to his/her time in history.” - Robert Rauschenberg

Witness Wall is a temporary plywood structure on the north side of PS1’s homestead at 225-229 N. Gilbert St, a collective response to the COVID-19 pandemic, its repercussions, and intertwined current events. Local artists are invited to take part in this evolving project, which is both ephemeral and accumulating.

Artists are welcome to contribute to the wall following the guidelines below.

Questions? Email: witnesswall@publicspaceone.com.

WW Guidelines:

• Please abide by social distancing guidelines and be aware of others in the vicinity (sidewalk, doctor’s office next door), especially if using toxic substances such as spray paint.

• The wall may be modified in any way so long as it does not destroy the plywood, impede the sidewalk, prevent others from accessing the wall, or modify the structural integrity of the wall. Allowed = painting, printing, drawing, pasting, stapling, gluing, screwing, nailing, carving, scraping, etc. Not = burning, removing large portions of the plywood.

• No derogatory or defamatory words or symbols may be placed on the wall (such items will be removed at the discretion of the PS1 gallery team).

• Please bring your own art supplies with you and remove all trash and unused supplies when you leave.

• Respect other artists’ work, but be aware and open to the fact that portions of the works may be utilized by or partially covered by another artist as the collage process takes shape, particularly as time goes on. Your contribution is both ephemeral and the long-term groundwork for what is to come.
