Call for Artist-in-Residence

For the 5th annual Open Air Media Festival invites proposals for our inaugural artist-in-residence program. The residency is designed to host a media artist for two weeks to create a site-specific project for the festival and facilitate a community workshop related to their project at Public Space One’s Media Arts Co-op. The residency aims to connect the visiting artist with the Iowa City arts community and expand the national audience of Open Air Media Festival.
We seek an artist-in-residence who presents artistic innovation in their work, utilizes new media/emerging technologies in their projects, provides accessible pedagogy for the workshop, and adapts their work with the event location in mind.
This residency is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

Eligibility
No submission fee!
This call is open to residents of the United States.
Artists must be age 18+
Students enrolled during the 2023-2024 calendar year are not eligible.

The applicant must have an active practice in media arts, specializing in one or more of the following areas: video art, projection mapping, interactive, installation, expanded cinema, performance art, sound/music
Timeline

Notification of acceptance: December 1, 2023
Residency: Monday May 20 - Sunday June 2, 2024, arrival and departure dates negotiable
Workshop: TBD, during the residency dates, dependent on workshop needs and space availability

Financial Support
$1000 - residency stipend
$400 - travel stipend
workshop payment $30/hr including workshop preparations and instruction time
$250 - allocated materials budget
Accommodations
Housing for this residency is provided at the Porchlight Literary Center, within one mile from Public Space One’s Close House. This is a one-bedroom apartment with a private entrance, located on the second floor of a nonprofit community literary space in a historic house.
An accessible (no stairs) alternative housing option is available upon request!
The AIR will have full access to Public Space One’s facilities (see list of resources below), including a dedicated work-area.
Terms
The artist must be present to install and de-install their own work immediately before and after the event.
Collaborators are welcome, however the stipend and accommodations listed above are fixed.
Project Information
The artist-in-residence is required to create/present a project, installation, or performance for the Open Air Media Festival on Saturday June 1st, 2024.
Location
The event will be located on the grounds of Public Space One’s Close House building. Please review images of the grounds to best outline your project proposal. The Close House is classified as a historic building, therefore, alterations, including hanging, taping, or otherwise affixing items to the building’s exterior is prohibited. Projects may not obstruct or interfere with accessibility features of the site or the accessibility accommodations provided by the event.
Project Assistance
Artists are responsible for securing items which are integral for the project.
A mid-range (4000-5000) lumen projector will be set aside for resident use for the festival. (this is not a high-powered projector for architectural mapping).
A variety of equipment is accessible on a first-come-first-serve basis through Public Space One’s:
Art Equipment Lending Library, for use at any time
Media Arts Co-op, for use in creating work, some of which could be reserved for festival use
OA staff will assist in additional equipment needs as much as possible.
Artists will coordinate with OA staff to ensure final schematics and installation plans are in accordance with NEA National Historic Preservation (NHPA) and National Environmental Policy Acts (NEPA).
