The Free Generative Writing Workshop provides a space for career writers, curious beginners, writers of all income levels and stages of life. Our goal is to make it easy to meet and learn from some of the most talented writer/teachers living in or passing through Iowa City. Every month a new writer leads a generative workshop, presenting a prompt inspired by their own preoccupations, passions, or interests.

This month’s facilitator:
Cavan Hallman's writing has been performed in NYC, New Orleans, Chicago, Cedar Rapids, Ireland, on screen, and on tour. His touring educational plays, which he also directs, have been performed over 20,000 times for nearly 5 million students across the United States. Cavan wrote and directed the world premiere of the musical Pictures of Marilyn at the National WWII Museum, named one of the ten best musicals of 2016 by The New Orleans Times-Picayune.He is the Founding Artistic Director of Mirrorbox Theatre in Cedar Rapids, IA, where he directed the Iowa premieres of Exit Strategy, Red Speedo, Luna Gale, and There Is A Happiness That Morning Is. In Cedar Rapids he has written and directed for Playtime Poppy's Summer Theatre Adventure; performed his solo show at RAYGUN; worked as a writer and performer for SPT's Tales From the Writer's Room; performed with The Hook; and he frequently teaches at Theatre Cedar Rapids, where he initiated the play-reading series Let’s Get Lit!
