Showcasing samples and art by participants in a Community Indigo Vat started during the Pandemic and maintained by Astrid Hilger Bennett. Through images and text, learn about indigo’s ancient worldwide roots with a problematic, colonial history. Explore slow fashion and one of our most enduring natural dyes. Feast your eyes on the variety of approaches taken by artists Jenna Bonistalli, Sean Tyler, Lindi Roe, Jocelyn Chateauvert, Emily Jalinsky, Leslie Bruch, Tonya Kehoe, Jan Friedman, Becky Hoffbauer, Joan Webster-Vore, Marty Monick and Astrid Bennett.

Trained as a printmaker, Astrid Hilger Bennett’s interest in fiber art and “making things” began in childhood. She received her BFA in printmaking from Indiana University and has exhibited and taught at various locations throughout the country and abroad. In addition to her practice as a maker, she is involved in creating and fostering communities. She has also been a cultural and small business advocate, having served as longtime manager, marketing director & co-owner of Iowa Artisans Gallery in Iowa City and currently, as Board President of the international textile nonprofit, Surface Design Association.
