This workshop is an introduction to the curious world of image tactility through intaglio platemaking and printmaking processes. By using metal & acid at PS1’s community print shop, beginners and beyond are welcome to investigate the texture and tonality inherent within the graphic or hand-drawn imagery of intaglio.
Participants will use an array of tools: etching needles, crayons, sharpies, dremel engraving, paint brushes, sponges, and more. With these tools in hand, we'll explore both classic and modern approaches to intaglio mark-making. Methods in plate preparation, drypoint, line etching, aquatint, stop-out, print-shop safety/etiquette, and printing technique will be discussed throughout the duration of the workshop!
At the onset of the first session participants are encouraged to enter with a rough idea, sketch, or digital image to be transformed into a two-state edition of prints. Participants can expect to leave with a new approach to creating texture within a line drawing, information necessary to continue etching and printing your own editions of intaglio prints! :)

PS1 workshops are pay-what-you-can thanks to support from Hills Bank, a Johnson County Quality of Life Grant, and individual donors. $269 is the true cost of the workshop for each participant. We encourage you to review the payment options and select the cost you can afford. If you have expendable income, please do not select the no-cost option and leave space for others. When you are able to pay on the higher end of the sliding scale, your payment helps others gain access who might have a more challenging financial situation.

TEACHING ARTIST
Emily Edwards is a mixed-media printmaker and ceramicist working primarily in monoprint, intaglio, screenprint and sculpture. Her current practice is driven by graphic and textural collage paired with memory studies and the found object. Her current body of work explores longevity, evocation, and the dismantling of wetland ecology in the Midwest. Based in Iowa City, Iowa, Edwards holds a BFA from the University of Iowa with a focus in Printmaking and a certificate in Museum Studies.
