About Moving Lines Ensemble:

An Albuquerque and Iowa City based ensemble, Moving Lines Ensemble was formed in 2018 with an aim of exploring interactions between music and spoken word. They often create through processes of collaborative, musical and poetic improvisation, establishing pieces which range from open improvisational frameworks to more traditionally notated scores and poems. In this way, they intentionally play with the relationship between the inevitable “score” or framework of a piece and its moment-by-moment realization. Drawing from a wide range of musical styles, their pieces tend toward direct expression of personal experience and frequently highlight various modes of transportation as a way of looking at relationships between body and place.

Moving Lines Ensemble has performed at Albuquerque Chatter, Thirsty Eye Brewing Company, and as made several appearances as part of the Thirsty Ear poetry event. In March 2023 they will be performing as a guest at the John Donald Robb Composers’ Symposium.

The current ensemble consists of a founders John Barney (poet/performer) and Levi Raleigh Brown (percussionist/composer) along with saxophonist Charlotte Leung and cellist Adrián Gómez.

PERFORMERS:

Albuquerque based performance artist and poet, John Barney has shown and performed work in New York, San Francisco and New Mexico including installations and readings featured at Burning Man, Austin International Poetry Festival, Bay Area Fringe Festival and the Johnson Art Museum. As part of his graduate studies in landscape architecture, he came out to New Mexico to work on projects at Zuni Pueblo. His work explores the dialectical relationships between body memory and place, and figure movement and void. He has shown and performed work at a variety of spaces in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, including Sunday Chatter, SiteSanta Fe, the Thirsty Eye/Exhibit Space 208, the Placitas Art Center, and the Harwood Art Center. And he was recently featured in Santa Fe’s Trend Magazine. John currently daylights as the Leslie Knope of the Bernalillo County Parks & Open Space Department.

Levi Raleigh Brown (b. 1996) is a composer, percussionist, pianist, and banjoist currently based in Iowa City, IA. His music aims to examine the shared aspects of the daily human experience, particularly in the ongoing struggle between our idea of control and the universal pattern of change and uncertainty. Is there a balance to be found in our search for meaning and order amidst an unpredictable, even chaotic experience of the world? How does the daily, often unconscious search for this balance bring us closer together? Often crossing genres and disciplines, he explores these ideas musically with a sense of spontaneity, drawing from a variety of musical styles, and creating a juxtaposition between musical structure and wild antics which disrupt a fully rational or formal understanding. Originally from Montana, Levi earned his Bachelor of Music from The University of Montana and his Master of Music in composition from the University of New Mexico.

A saxophonist and music educator originally from Hong Kong, Charlotte Leung is currently studying under Dr. Kenneth Tse, in pursuit of a Doctor of Musical Arts in Saxophone Performance at the University of Iowa. With degrees from the University of Montana (BM, BME) and the University of New Mexico (MM) in education and performance, Charlotte has studied privately with saxophonists Dr. Eric Lau, Dr. Johan Erikson, and Dr. Ashley Kelly. She is a highly accomplished performer both in solo and ensemble settings and was the winner of the 2019 University of New Mexico Concerto Aria Competition. In addition, she was invited twice to perform and teach at the Music from Angel Fire Residency as a part of the Platinum Saxophone Quartet. In 2015 she cofounded the Eudae Duo with percussionist/composer Levi Raleigh Brown, which is dedicated to performing new music for saxophone and percussion.

Adrián Gómez is a cellist originally from Spain and currently based in Iowa City. He completed his Bachelors’ in Music Education and Cello Performance in Spain and his Master’s degree in Cello Performance at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is currently working toward his Doctorate in Cello Performance from the University of Iowa. He performs extensively around Iowa and is a member of numerous ensemble including Zemra Duo and the Kaydenn String Quartet, which was recently awarded a residency at the Knox-Galesburg Symphony.
