Natural Dyeing for Beginners

Learn the process of natural dyeing from start to finish. How to prep cellulose cotton & protein silk fibers for dyeing, scouring, mordanting, how to prepare a dye bath for immersion dyeing, supplies, set up, and finish with covering modifiers to alter colors, so you can get multiple colors from a single dye. Students will dye cotton & silk fabric with different natural dyes.

Open to ages 18+.

*PS1 workshops are pay-what-you-can thanks to support from Hills Bank and individual donors. $184 is the true cost of the workshop, and we encourage participants to select the cost that they can afford, or pay a little extra to support future sliding-scale fees.

Lilah Ward Shepherd is a multidisciplinary artist working with textiles, natural dyeing, printmaking, clay, painting and drawing. She received her MFA from the university of Iowa in printmaking and MA in ceramics. Her work explores color relationships, geometric shapes and patterning, relationships between forms and space while investigating human relationships, identity, ancestry, peace, comfort, and play.
