story crafting with plants: worldbuilding for the future

  • Public Space One 229 N. Gilbert St. Iowa City, IA 52245 United States (map)

Join Center for Afrofuturist Studies artist-in-residence Ingrid Raphaël for a community workshop that explores world building using y(our) relationship to nature, plants and our neighborhoods as a way to craft stories about our futures.

We will meet at the garden at the Northside PS1 where we will ground ourselves in land, identify a plant of choice and build a metaphor and world around it to envision the kinds of futures we want in a story form: this can include storyboarding, world-map, scene with dialogue, a story treatment, collage etc…

This workshop is informed by Ingrid’s filmmaking process developing a speculative narrative that envisions an environmentally collapsed future with memory loss and spiderwebs as metaphors for home-building and informed by their learnings as co-founder/curator at NO EVIL EYE CINEMA.

Participation is free. We especially encourage Black, Indigenous, PoC, and folks who have historically been left out of land, arts, and education spaces to join us. Please RSVP by Friday, Aug. 18.

Registration is now closed. Please contact kalmia@publicspaceone.com with any questions.

Thank you to Ruth Foundation for the Arts, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and the Gannett Foundation for supporting Ingrid’s residency!
