We are creating a permanent home for artistic experimentation and community in downtown Iowa City in two historic houses at 225 & 229 N. Gilbert St.
a gallery embedded in a welcoming community space
increased space for the Iowa City Press Co-op, our community-access educational print and book arts studio, with a new dedicated classroom space and loads of natural light
a public reading room & archive for The Center for Afrofuturist Studies
a dedicated residency studio for the CAS and Free Studio Residency
light-filled private studios for local artists
an outdoor space for community gatherings and creative events of all kinds
Beyond that!
New opportunities for artists
New life for two historic houses in the heart of the Northside
A permanent home base for Iowa City’s artist-run, community-driven contemporary art center
Through years of sustained energy and ingenuity, countless volunteer hours, and an ethos that harnesses and amplifies the creative ideas of our specific community, we have steadily built a locally-resourced, regionally-recognized, and nationally known community arts venue, an Iowa hub for contemporary art, artists, and audiences who desire connection to and a platform for new art ideas and actions. (Check out some highlights here!)
The City of Iowa City has recognized our contribution to the local creative community and awarded us an opportunity to purchase two adjacent historic houses on N. Gilbert St., just a few blocks from our current location, along with support to cover the down payment (thank you!!)
Starting in August, we began transforming this corner into a dynamic and accessible art center and a permanent home for our artist-led, community-driven organization.
