letterpress image making
letterpress image making
with Kalmia Strong
Sat. Oct. 19 & Sun. Oct. 20, 1-5p
at the IC Press Co-op (225 N. Gilbert)
pay-what-you-can: $30-$175
In this workshop, we’ll explore two approaches to collage-based image creation using the Vandercook and Showcard presses in our letterpress studio, which can yield subtle and complex imagery that can illustrate a broadside, cover a book, or be its own art print. Participants will learn how to create and print blocks and matrices for relief collagraphs and pressure prints using simple materials like cloth and paper, and explore variations to create more complex images including ghost prints, shaped blocks, and layering. And of course we’ll cover the basics of press set-up and clean-up. We’ll focus on experimentation during the workshop, so that participants can leave with samples, knowledge, and inspiration to create their own intentional prints in the future.
Some letterpress/printmaking experience is helpful, but not required.
Open to ages 18+
Registration deadline: Oct. 15
*PS1 workshops are pay-what-you-can thanks to support from Hills Bank and individual donors. $148 is the true cost of the workshop, and we encourage participants to select the cost that they can afford, or pay a little extra to support future sliding-scale fees.
