OPEN CALL for ARTIST PARTICIPANTS
in the (inaugural) PS1 Autumnal Equinox Art-a-Thon Fundraiser

benefiting PS1 + artists
APPLY HERE by Aug. 23 at midnight

As we seek equilibrium in a year that has been anything but stable, we’ve found solidarity in our galaxy, a universe of artists who, in 2020’s Zoom rooms, masked marches (B!L!M!), and beyond, have shown us resilience and inspiration, day and night, through tough weather and strange times. As an artist-led institution, we depend on these folx and we are composed of these folx! So we’re anticipating planetary orbits and gravitational pull to bring artists and art workers and our community into alignment for a telethon-style 24-hour livestreamed fundraiser event on the autumnal equinox!

Participation may include: an artist talk, a performance, a reading, a demonstration, a dance party, an animation, an exercise video, or a showcase for any part of your artistic practice from research to rest, practice to nourishment. The event itself will be a variety show including pre-recorded video content, live events/info, performances, screenings, readings, durational activities, interviews, music videos, art adverts, visual propaganda, sound experiments, cooking show, radio drama, and/or more. In certain cases (durational performance/activity), your time slot could be split up in smaller spans throughout the 24 hour event. For those in Iowa City, there may be a possibility for outdoor/safe IRL moments as well. We will be soliciting donations throughout, and all proceeds from the event will be will be split 50/50 between PS1 and participating artists.

We will select up to 12 artists from this open call to create ~15 minutes of content each. Selections will be based on a combination of the strength of your segment idea and our effort to represent artists in our community with diverse practices, backgrounds, and experiences and support artists whose livelihood has been negatively impacted this year.

Applications are due August 23rd and notifications will be made by August 25th. Content will be due Sept. 3rd.

call for entries: time now for ghosts group exhibition

time now for ghosts is the exploration of traditional nature centered spiritualities and realities as they are interpreted through the practices of Black artists working with an afrofuturist lens and hand. This is an exploration of the future, as we return to our pasts. time now for ghosts looks into the intersections of time and relativity, to expand our understanding of when - what does it look like for our ghosts to come from the future? along with the presence of the Black body, the Black consciousness within the natural world.

This exhibition is a conversation around afrofuturism and how it can manifest itself within the natural world, either terrestrial or celestial.

We encourage Black artists working and living throughout the Midwest, especially Iowa and Nebraska to submit work for consideration.
